Gray Wolf Interesting Facts

Wolves communicate through their spine-tingling howl. This they use to attract the attention of their pack or they may send messages to other packs. But sometimes they howl to confront like domestic dogs and of course they are members of the dog family. Gray wolves have an interesting adversarial history with humans although they almost never attack them.

Wolves usually live and hunt in a group of around six to ten. They roam large distances and may travel 12 miles in a single day. These animals prey on large animals such as deer, elk, and moose. Interestingly, a single wolf can eat 20 pounds of meat at one sitting! They also eat smaller mammals like birds, fish, lizards, snakes, and fruit.

Wolves maintain a strict hierarchy within their pack. A dominant male at the helm and his mate not far behind. The young pups are taken care of by the adults which bring them food and keep a watch over them.
