Weird Festival: Baby Jumping or El Colacho– Murcia, Spain

This is going to be weird for you, men dressed as the Devil (known as the Colacho) jump over the babies who lie on mattresses in the street. This must be frightening for you if you are a parent yourself or even if you are not a parent…because who doesn’t love babies?

This festival known as the El Colacho or the Baby Jumping is a annual traditional Spanish practice which dates back to 1620. It is to celebrate the Catholic feast of Corpus Christi in the village of Castrillo de Murcia near Burgos.

The origins of this bizarre tradition are unknown but the locals believe that this practice purify the babies and cleanse them of original sin, ensure their safety throughout life and protect them against illness and evil spirits.
